Peter and Josephine

Meet Peter and Josephine (Jo)! Peter and Jo have no children and have lived in New York and Salem, Massachusetts for several years. They moved to Maine six years ago to live a quieter more relaxed life. Peter and Jo have a duplex apartment building on Pleasant Street in Waterville, which they reside on one side of and rent the other. They also have other rental property that they own and manage in Maine. Peter and Jo live on a quiet and friendly street in Waterville, but within walking distance from downtown and many shops and restaurants. They reside in a home that is approximately 150 years old, but beautifully kept up over the years. Their side of the duplex has two bedrooms and a bathroom on the second story. The main floor of their apartment has a lovely dining room, kitchen, half bath, and living room. Their home has a lovely enclosed porch and can be used most months of the year.

Peter and Jo are both Notary Publics and they both attended 15 weeks at the Civilian Police Academy and received certificates for their participation. Peter and Jo both have lots of life experiences that have helped them come to this place in their lives where they want to dedicate themselves to helping others. Peter and Jo have experience doing respite for adults with disabilities through other organizations, and will also be providing respite through Momentum until they have someone to support full time in their home. Peter has been in law enforcement, owned his own restaurant for 10 years in New York, NY, and he has had friends and family that he has helped through hard times. Peter has achieved his Bachelors degree in political science from Bernard Baruch College in New York. Jo grew up with a friend/neighbor who had a disability and she was always helping him in some way. Jo most recently worked as an accounting/office manager for Alloy Marketing and promotions in Boston, Massachusetts. Jo has worked in Management positions most of her working career and she has achieved her bachelors degree in Art History from Queens College, New York.

The bedroom that has been set aside for the person Peter and Jo support is on the second story and has a nice spacious closet, bureau, twin sized bed, and stuffed chair. The room is ready for someone to move right in and start putting their own things around to decorate it. The bedroom is right next to the bathroom and offers privacy and comfort for the person who occupies it.

Peter and Jo have both been certified in C.P.R., First Aid, Mandt, Hippa, and Blood Born Pathogens. They are prepared to attend the required 24-hour CRMA course through Momentum very soon. They will also be part of the pilot program through Momentum for the on-line DSP – College of Direct Support when it becomes available.

Peter and Jo enjoy spending time together antiquing, visiting historical sights and museums, craft fairs, political activism via internet for animal and children’s welfare, going to the movies, reading, and gardening. Jo also enjoys arts and crafts, stained glass work, and playing computer games. Peter enjoys cooking, Internet sales of antiques and collectibles, and spending time at home. Jo and Peter have been involved over the years with “community watch” programs and have even tried to become involved in such a program since moving to Maine. They were both literacy volunteers and active in Big-Brother-Big Sister programs in Massachusetts.

Peter and Jo have researched the area for services that would be available to a person they support. They have found that Waterville has much in the way of services for adults with disabilities. Ken-a-set and the Dill Center are both close by and offer great services to adults.

Peter and Jo are spiritual people, but do not belong to any organized church organization. They respect all religions and will support the person who lives with them in attending any religious event or church of their choice.

Peter and Jo have provided Momentum with references. Their references describe them as: “sharp, reliable, honest, intelligent, confident, generous in nature, responsible, good listeners, friendly, fair, and that they work great under pressure.” They are also described by their references as “accepting of all others, organized, humorous, decisive, unbiased, calm, kind, even-tempered, compassionate, and people you can always count on.” All of their references highly recommend them as providers to care for someone in their home. Their references said they would have Peter and Jo care for someone they love.

Neither Peter nor Jo smoke. Peter and Jo said they would support someone who smokes, but due to Jo’s allergies, they would need to smoke outdoors or on the porch.

Peter and Jo have one small dog named Hapi. Hapi is a one-year-old Shih Tzu and has a friendly personality.

Peter and Jo would like to support an adult, either male or female, of any age, who is able to climb stairs and who is ambulatory. They are happy to help someone of any race or religion, and who may smoke as long as they don’t mind smoking outdoors. They would prefer to support someone who is able to perform personal care duties independently and who might enjoy a quiet family setting and relaxed lifestyle. They would like to support someone who likes little dogs and who enjoys getting out occasionally.

Peter and Jo have submitted all of the necessary paperwork and required information to Momentum, Inc. and have successfully completed the qualification process. Their home inspection and background checks have come back with no problems or concerns. Their desire to help others and their level of competence is outstanding. They have shown that they have an open mind and an eagerness to get started as home care providers. They share in Momentum’s philosophy that people of all abilities have great things to share and deserve choice, self-advocacy and a dignified life experience.
